Swim England South East Open/Junior Championships 2019 @ Portsmouth

The Swim England South East Open and Junior Championships will take place at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth on Saturday/Sunday 2nd/3rd November 2019.

A LIST OF ACCEPTED/REJECTED ENTRIES IS NOW SHOWN BELOW.

Entries have been rejected if the times could not be validated against rankings or because events are oversubscribed. Changes to entries for the 100m IM up to 12:00 on 23rd October are now shown in this list.

Because some swimmers have withdrawn with injuries, we have been able to accept a small number of additional swims. Please check the lists below for the latest status.

If you have any questions, please e-mail serentries@swimmeets.org

Reserves

I have had a number of requests from people to be reserves for this competition.

We do not have reserves. Our experience is that handling reserves in the high pressure period just before the start of the session is error prone and that in turn threatens the smooth running of the competition.

We already have long days and some people have a long journey home on Sunday evening. We are not prepared to do anything that could introduce preventable delays.

Except for the events of 400m and longer, we do actually accept more swimmers that we have planned for in the event timing, in the expectation that we will have withdrawals and "lose" a few heats.

Officials and Volunteers

Technical Officials should report to the Referee at the start of warm-up in one of the function rooms. We will not know which one until Saturday morning.

Non technical volunteers should report to Brian Deval at least 30 minutes before the start of each session. He will be stationed on the balcony foyer near the top of the stairs underneath a region banner.

Trophies

After a great deal of discussion, Swim England South East has decided to stop awarding trophies for individual events at our championships. We will continue to award inscribed medals.

There are a number of reasons for this decision (which mirrors decisions taken by Swim England).

  • It is clear that many swimmers, particularly older swimmers, no longer care about trophies.
  • Every year, a number of swimmers choose not to take trophies.
  • The majority of trophies are returned in a poor state, not cleaned and every year a significant number of trophies are returned with damage that has to be repaired.

We have not yet decided what to do with the trophies that we have. Initially they will be places in secure storage. We are looking at ways to allow clubs/swimmers to access trophies on request.

We are planning to create a series of web pages that include photos of trophies and a list of winners since the Region was formed.

If you have a trophy that was presented in 2018, we request that you arrange for it to be returned to us at the medal desk at Portsmouth next weekend.

Update - Tuesday 22nd October

All submitted entries that did not appear in the list of entries received have now been resolved and recorded in the meet management system.

Following a warning that the ruling on 100m IM times may be the subject of a protest, the Lead Referee has recommended that we do accept times from level 4 meets. The implications of this are:

  1. We will accept the fastest 50 times set in level 2 or 3 meets.
  2. In addition, we will accept times set in level 4 meets that are faster than the slowest level 2/3 time accepted.
  3. Any swimmer who originally submitted a level 4 time and has removed that entry should e-mail serentries@swimmeets.org to request that the swim be reinstated.

Qualifying Times

Provisional base and automatic qualifying times are now available. Meet files for creation of files of club entries will be available by 1st September.

Closing date for entries: Monday 21st October @ 20:00.

All times must be set in level 1, 2 or 3 licensed meets on or after 1st January 2019. and must appear on Swim England Rankings on the closing date..

For 100m Individual Medley only, we will accept times from any level 1, 2, 3 or 4 meet on or after 1st November 2018.

First leg relay splits are NOT acceptable; times from Masters Rankings are not acceptable.

The target number of swims to be accepted for each event is follows:

Distance Number of Accepted Entries
50m 64
100m 50
200m 42
400m 32
800m/1500m 24

Why Have Qualifying Times?

  1. To give swimmers who achieve the automatic time the certainty that their entry will be accepted, to enable them to make appropriate travel arrangements.
  2. To manage the number of entries that will be rejected.
