2018 County Championships - Major Changes

Additional information about the 2018 County Championships is being added progressively over the next few days.

Open/Junior Awards

We will NOT be making Open/Junior awards as part of this competition. With age group finals, it is not practical to determine Open/Junior placings.

We are looking for an opportunity to run an Open/Junior Championships at some other time in 2018, possibly in partnership with a club that already has a short course meet in the calendar.

14/Under Swimmers in "Youth" Championships

Swimmers under 15 will NOT be accepted for the final weekend of the championships. With no Open/Junior awards, these would effectively be time trials, which the conditions do not permit. In addition, we are adding additional finals, which means that the time available for heats is reduced by just over 10%.

Age Group Finals

There will be separate finals for Age 15, Age 16 and Age 17/Over. Last year, very few 16 years olds (particularly boys) qualified for the 16/Over finals.

Qualifying Times

In 2017, there was a large variation in the number of accepted entries for different events

  • Between strokes
  • Between ages
  • Between sexes

The 2018 base and automatic times have been set to address this

  • We have a target number of swims for each event, which will result in approximately the same number of swims as in 2017
  • Auto and base times have been set based on 2017 entries
  • Auto times have been set to 60% fill each event
  • Base times have been set to 120% fill each event

In line with the Region, we are moving to a system of accepting a fixed number of swimmers per eveny

Why have automatic QTs?

  • To give as many swimmers as practical the certainty of acceptance
  • To help in recruitment of officials and volunteers

Why have base (Consideration) times?

  • To set a minimum standard and help in managing session times

A first draft of short course times is now available. Long course equivalent times will be published in due course. It is likely that we have made one or two errors. Please notify us of any apparent anomalies and we will be able to check against last year's entries.

Entry Fees

We have been forced to increase entry fees this year

  • To cover increased costs of pool hire and officials expenses and a 10% reduction in entries for the 15/over competition
  • To enable continued support of the Inter-County team
  • To support additional development activities in line with the recommendations of Swim England

Fees for 2018

  • Individual events: £6 per event (was £5)
  • Team events: £10 (was £8)
