SCASA Short Course Masters and 19/24 Age Group Competition 2004 @ Barnet Copthall

Barnet Copthall
25th September 2004

The change to a one day format from recent years’ two days worked successfully although it was a very long day for the swimmers, officials and organisers. Whilst we all went home quite tired, we could look forward to a free Sunday for other things. Entries from 270 competitors were however about 9% down on 2003 though we will never know whether this is due to the changed format or simply fluctuating demand.

The swimming standard remained high with five British and one European Record being set - details below. In the absence of the SCASA President committed to swimming duties elsewhere, the medals were presented to the record breakers by David Barnes, President of Middlesex County ASA.

Event Age Group Name Club Time
Womens 400m Freestyle 40-44 Nuala Muir-Cochrane Camden Swiss Cottage 4:39.98 (also european record)
Mens 50 Butterfly 45-49 Paul Morris Basildon 28.01
Mens 100 Butterfly 45-49 Paul Morris Basildon 1.01.83
Mens 200 Butterfly 60-64 Derek Parr Otter 2.46.98
Women 200m Medley Team 240-279 Kenilworth 2.41.40

The Barnet Pool is excellent for swimming, and competitors appreciated the use of the Activity Pool (Diving Pit) for warm ups and swim downs most of the day. However the catering service leaves a lot to be desired and ran out of sandwiches by lunchtime.

The new hands on recording team of Terry Wright and Sue Lauder did a sterling job with few errors, and the SCASA Officials once again came up trumps with friendliness and efficiency.
